Motocross 101: Essential Gear and Equipment for Beginners - Gearing Up for Glory (and Safety!)

So, you've caught the motocross bug? Awesome! Dirt-flinging, adrenaline-pumping fun awaits your weekends, but before you unleash your inner champion, let's talk about what you need to conquer those tracks safely and comfortably so you won’t get injured, be taken away from the track in an ambulance or, worse, damage your bike!!

We think of safety as suiting up for battle — a battle against dirt, jumps and maybe even a little self-doubt (but mostly dirt).

Safety first: Gear up like a pro!

Let's face it: trip-ups, topples and tumbles are all part of the learning process in motocross. That's why having the proper safety gear is like having a superhero suit – it protects you when things get a little wild.

Here are some of the crucial bits of safety gear you will need to help you protect your bones, brains and bragging rights.

A good quality helmet
This is your #1 priority as it protects your grey matter, so don’t skimp on a cheap and nasty brain bucket. A properly fitted, full-face helmet that meets safety standards is your knight in shining armour. Look for one with good ventilation to keep you cool and prevent that annoying fogging up when you're pushing hard around those berms.

Your eyes are precious cargo, so shield them from the flying debris party that comes with the territory. Your best bet is goggles with a good seal and interchangeable lenses for different lighting conditions if you’re going to be riding at different times of the day.

A chest protector
This bad boy absorbs impact and protects your vital organs in a crash. Think of it as a bulletproof vest for your upper body but for crashes and tumbles off your braaap machine.

Gearing Up for Performance: Comfort is Key!

Now that you've got all your vitals protected, let's talk about maximising your performance out on the tracks. The right gear should feel like a second skin, allowing you to move freely and focus on conquering those jumps.

Jersey & pants:
Motocross involves a lot of flying dirt, rocks and maybe even the occasional tumble (hey, it happens to the best of us!). Abrasion-resistant materials like leather or synthetic fabrics are your friends here. They'll help protect your skin if you take a tumble (and trust us, you will at some point!). Imagine sliding across the dirt in just a T-shirt and jeans — not exactly a recipe for fun!

If you're riding in hot weather, breathable materials will help keep you cool and prevent overheating. For cooler climates, a thermal layer underneath your jersey might be a good idea.

A good pair of sturdy boots with proper ankle protection are essential. Look for soles with good grip to keep you planted firmly on your bike. No one wants rogue feet when they're trying to nail a jump!

Here are some things to consider when purchasing a pair of boots for MX:-

  • Ankle support is crucial to prevent injuries.
  • Strong shin guards deflect roost and impacts.
  • A solid, reinforced toe box shields you from rocks, roost and unexpectedly kissing the ground with your toes.
  • Boots should allow for easy shifting and manoeuvring of the bike.
  • Get soles with good grip for maintaining control on uneven terrain.
  • A snug but comfortable fit prevents blisters and cramping.
  • Allow new boots some time to break in for top-notch comfort.
  • Look for a secure and easy-to-use buckle system

Protect those digits and hands from blisters and impacts. Choose a pair of MX gloves with good grip and padding for extra comfort and control.

The perfect fit: Safety and performance in harmony

Remember, the best gear is the gear that fits you well. Not too loose that it becomes a floppy mess when you’re burling around the track, and not too tight that it restricts your movement like a those jeans from the 80’s you just don’t want to chuck out. Think Goldilocks – just right!

Bonus Tips
Consider adding optional protective gear like elbow guards, knee guards, a neck brace and a kidney belt for an extra layer of confidence.

Keeping cool and comfy
Base layers are a great way to wick away sweat and help regulate your body temperature when you’re on the track. Think of it as your personal air conditioning system! Hydration packs help you stay hydrated, especially on those long rides. A hydration pack lets you quench your thirst without having to pit stop every five minutes to get a drink.

Finding the perfect balance

Like everything in life, it's all about balance. Gear that fits comfortably allows for better movement and prevents chafing when you’re throwing your soil surfer around the track. Breathable materials keep you cool and prevent overheating. And finally, lighter gear helps you move more freely and fatigue less quickly.

So there you have it, future motocross champs! With the right gear, you'll be ready to tackle the track with confidence, comfort and of course, style (because let's face it, looking good is half the battle!). Now get out there, shred some dirt and have a blast!
